So, Dungeons of Dredmor does away with character classes or race. The core mechanics of the genre are still just as addictive as ever and remain, stalwart as ever. Just like with the equally amazing indie shoot 'em up Jamestown, the developers of Dungeons of Dredmor have realized that in convincing a broad player base of the quality of an odd, hardcore and at times inaccessible genre, requires only updated graphics, a new UI and a few modern additions. In short: being addictive is in Dungeons of Dredmor’s DNA.īut it’s what it does with its heritage that deserves special attention. A genre in which every “D” could mean an end to your heroic and that ultimately spawned both Blizzard’s Diablo games and the more esoteric Dwarven society simulator, Dwarf Fortress. Dungeons of Dredmor is a modern indie version of a roguelike, the 80s genre of top down, turn-based dungeon crawlers with randomized dungeons, complex rule sets, gruelling difficulty and, at its most traditional, abstract ASCII-graphics. Why? What makes losing in Dungeons of Dredmor so much fun? I can’t stop picking a set of weird skills of varying usefulness for my heroes and wasting life after heroic life in those hand drawn dungeons. In other words: I can’t say I’m even near beating the eponymous big bad Dredmor, but I can’t stop. Be it the bushy eyebrowed barbarian and Lutefisk-afficionado Bronsky IV (dead, because he was too proud to escape an army of Diggles, bats and blobs through a Diabolical Portal), or the bushy eyebrowed Bronsky XI, a reformed vampire and necromancer, who was too curious for his own good and was clobbered to death by a robot as a result. This is a game that has swallowed over a dozen similarly dandy heroes of mine. ' Congratulations, you are dead!' proclaims Dungeons of Dreadmor in merrily bold letters. He is also being dismembered by the first creature he encounters in Dungeons of Dredmor: a Diggle, an adorable egg-hatching dolphin/power-drill hybrid. He’s an archaeologist with a nifty hat, he can summon a mean moustache golem and he can do science and he’s a mathemagician. Have you met, Bronsky II? He’s a hero, his big brown bushy eyebrows tell you as much. Dungeons of Dredmor Review Publisher: Gaslamp Games

Why Google is dabbling in accommodation is a mystery for another day. Some of them include Google Play credits and preferred pricing on select hotels (up to 40%) found in Google Search. What these benefits are, I can’t say as they vary from country to country. Note, a Best Buy account is required for this digital subscription. Thanks to community member Rahul5931 for finding this deal. If you have a 200 GB Google One plan through Pixel Pass, you can change your plan to have more storage through the Google One website. Once you become a paying subscriber, Google One gives you access to Google experts, the option to add family members and extra member benefits. Best Buy has 3-Month of 100GB Google One Digital Subscription (New Subscribers Only) for Free when you add to cart/checkout. Google One’s paid offering starts at 100GB to as much as 30TB of storage with a lineup of subscription plans to choose from depending on your usage. After you upgrade from your free storage plan, a Google One membership replaces your current Drive storage plan. Google One is a subscription-based plan you can upgrade to once you exceed Google’s free 15GB cap. Google Photos: storage & pricing: Google Photos (p/month) iCloud (p/month) Free. Here is a detailed comparison of iCloud vs. However, both services provide you with more options as far as their paid versions are concerned. How to Sync folders between your computer and Google Drive So then, what’s Google One? Unlike Google Photos, iCloud offers less free space. And as you know, Google Drive storage is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. That’s it in-browser isn’t your thing.Īs long as you have a Google account, you are indeed legible for a free storage service limited to a sizable 15GB of storage. Not quite done with us, Google Drive also offers downloadable apps for Mac/iOS, Windows, and Android devices, giving users the capability to offline. Infinitely useful Excursion Funnels (levitation beams) and Light Bridges are more than just here-to-there movers-they can be applied to block or push away turrets, halt a catapulting jump before it throws you into oblivion, or help you climb a sheer wall. Lasers emitting from walls combine with moveable Refractor Cubes to create the closest thing Portal 2 has to an offensive weapon-an aimable laser-but more often your job is to focus the beam on trigger switches through portals. Without changing the nature of the established and celebrated gameplay, Portal 2's gentle learning curve begins by reintroducing us to its basic concepts, then keeps on introducing new inventions to use with portals until around three quarters of the way through, and chambers become complex jungles of hazardous obstacles. And the finale? Not challenging in the least, but a spectacular and extremely clever finish to the story, with extra points for those who've paid close attention to Mr. It does all this and more while recycling very few of Portal's greatest comedy hits-there's nary a nod to dishonest cake, and the beloved Weighted Companion Cube makes only a cameo appearance. Through death, resurrection, revenge, and reversal of fortune, their charm makes what would otherwise be an empty and lifeless world feel boisterous and alive-and more than makes up for the player character being a faceless mute. Sure, I saw the plot twists coming, but still looked forward to witnessing exactly how the characters would react. Also in the mix is actor JK Simmons, who lends his fittingly cantankerous voice to the founder of Aperture, Cave Johnson, whose comically sociopathic approach to science is second only to GLaDOS'. Fantastically voiced by British actor Stephen Merchant (basically playing the same mind-bogglingly stupid character from the Ricky Gervais comedy Extras), Wheatley's a doofus AI who makes you turn around while he hacks doors (he can't do it while you're watching). On the wave of excitement generated by Machinarium, I decided to buy the full version of Samorost 2. Bought yesterday and already finished it, just couldn't stop!Īmazing quality, and great point and click adventure. I am experiencing the very same issue, and I will try to explain it further.īut before that, let me just congratulate with you guys for the amazing quality of Machinarium. I also re-installed to make sure nothing in the package had been broken, but no luck There's a problem w/ loading levels, and now local storage has somehow recorded bad data, since anywhere i place the samorost icon to maybe remove the Local Storage connection, i still get the black screen after "play" and loading broken levels. I realize i can wait till tomorrow and play Machinarium, but that still leaves me with a broken game i've never even gotten to interact with. I don't want to raise a fuss, but i've paid money for this game, and it's not behaving! (for example: the first level of chapter 1 simply shows the robot sitting, but the rocket never arrives, so i can do nothing) I can still load levels, but they are all broken. I get a split-second glimps of a loading bar, then a black screen.Īfter that, restarting Samorost gives me a black screen after hitting "play". Here, everything works fine, till i pass through the elevator: Thinking that it might have something to do w/ variables from previous levels being needed, i loaded the last level of chapter 1. I can do the "butterfly > leaf > turn over bug" thing, but with my little guy still hanging there, it's not much use. I can then no longer click on the parachute, the cursor remains an arrow. I enter the code "PLANINA" to get to the 2nd chapter, but then i am stuck:Ĭlicking on the parachute on the ground simply makes the parachute's button disappear without actually releasing the dog. I agree and restart Samorost 2 just to be sure. When i open Samorost 2 on my mac, Flash asks me for authorisation of Local Storage. First of all, i adore Samorost and have already pre-ordered Machinarium. It mentions in the utopia video that weaker or less-social mice had no way of escaping the colony. (Episode 3 that covers the rise and fall of the Roman Empire–particularly the fall–is eerily similar to what we’re seeing today: sexual promiscuity, a failure to discipline children, a lower birthrate, and a pursuit of luxury and leisure over hard work.) (This explains why, for instance, you cannot bring democracy into certain cultures voting for a leader may be tried a few times, but a dictator will inevitably rise because that’s what the people are programmed to respond to due to their upbringing.) This theory is known as “biohistory.” wars) happen every few generations, but there’s also a new theory that there are actual biological cycles that drive human expansion and contraction, and that how children are raised will dictate the overall direction of a society when those children become adults. There is the idea of a “Fourth Turning,” in that major cycles of up and down in things like the economy and social aggression (i.e. He argues that because there is no real challenge, like searching for food or avoiding predators, the mice become so bored and unchallenged that they pick pointless fights, stress themselves out, or become totally self-absorbed just to have something to do.Īnd while Bill is the first person I have seen draw a parallel between Mouse Utopia and our own crumbling society, the idea that civilizations have a cyclical rise and fall is not new. His idea is that the utopia part is the problem, not the space or lack of social distancing. The mice ended up dying off completely from a lack of desire to breed and raise offspring–even after social pressures were removed by a reduction in the population.īill Whittle has a theory about the true source of the problem. You would expect to see a population cycle of ups and downs where they get too big, trouble arises, then the population reduces and starts again (the way human civilizations inevitably seem to work), or perhaps the population would become steady and maintain at a level that’s physiologically safe for everyone.īut that’s not what happened. Once the mice started having fewer offspring and/or many of those offspring did not live to maturity, the population should have reduced to the point that they were no longer socially crowded and the stress reduced and the mice returned to normal behavior. They seem to intuitively know (or have figured out by living it) that people need privacy more than space.)īut there’s one problem with this idea. A number of people who live in tiny houses with a spouse and/or children mention making an area, even if only separated by a curtain, where people can be alone and have some privacy. (Something to consider if you want to build a tiny house. A later theory developed from this is that there is a need for physical space and a separate need for social space, and it’s actually more important to get away from others than it is to have a lot of space to live in. It’s quite a famous experiment:Īs you will note in the video, the assumption about what went wrong with the rat and mouse cities is that a critical mass of individuals was hit before actual space (much less other resources) ran out. If you are not familiar with the Mouse Utopia Experiment, here’s a video about it. The other day, Bill Whittle had a YouTube video about the Mouse Utopia experiment and how it applies to modern Americans (and Europeans, for that matter). It features all types of downscaling and filters, including Bilinear, Bicubic and Lanczos (Antialias). It’s a successor to PIL and it works with about 30 types of image files, including all popular image formats used on the web, such as JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP. Three picture downsampling types and their respective window function shapes PillowĪmong all the alternatives, the Pillow library is one of the most functional and popular image processing libraries in Python. Lanczos, aka Antialias, has the widest functionality among these three and is overkill for most cases as it works in the 8x8 pixel neighborhood.įor some reason, PIL uses Lanczos by default, and therefore it’s very slow in resizing image tasks. Bicubic is a more advanced function that preserves more sharp edges when resizing and works with 4x4 pixel cubes. Bilinear, a simple one, may produce a few resizing artifacts but is good enough for most images. To make a long story short, there are three interpolation resizing methods (which feature window functions). It’s a well-known library, but it doesn’t use the most optimal way of resizing images. It offers methods to open, manipulate (including resizing and compression) and save image files. It works with Python version 2, which was discontinued in 2020. In the beginning, there was PIL, an open-source Python Imaging Library. Therefore, it’s easier to read the source code and understand what exactly Python functions are doing. Python scripts are usually shorter than the same scripts in functionality made with the C language family, Java and other popular programming languages. In turn, it directly affects the average shopping cart value for both existing users and first-time visitors. It’s commercially viable for online stores (with a picture traffic of up to 80%), because the shorter the loading time, the more pages users will open. Image optimization is a must-have for any website that has pictures that take up to 60% of the traffic. While the algorithms for JPEG resizing & compression are quite complicated and include functional math and operations like convolution and window functions, we won’t go that deep today we’ll just quickly go over the interfaces for developers and do some efficiency comparisons. Popular Python libraries for image processing A bit more on that later in this article. All these libraries are open source, so you can just take them and use their methods and functions to deal with images, or you can fork the libraries on GitHub and customize them for your needs or optimize them, as Alex Karpinsky did with Pillow. In this article, we’ll run through the most popular Python libraries that you can use on your website to optimize and resize images on the fly. Python is also used for image compression and image resize operations. It’s very powerful at doing mathematical calculations and it works with dynamic data types. Whenever you code in this or another programming language, you can include Python libraries into your project and utilize their classes and methods, thanks to its object-oriented structure. Python is a great and accessible programming language for automation scripts and components of web services. We hypothesize that the longstanding auditory deprivation associated with profound unilateral hearing loss (UHL) could lead to a central adaptation process, contributing to the loss of lateralization of the Weber tuning fork test. Statistical analysis was performed using JMP 15 Software (Statistical Analysis Systems “SAS” Institute, Cary, NC, USA). SSD was defined by contralateral a PTA four-frequency average threshold below or equal to 30 dB, while AHL was defined by a PTA four-frequency average threshold above 30dB. According to the status of the contralateral ear, the patients were divided into single-sided deafness (SSD) or asymmetric hearing loss (AHL) groups. To meet the inclusion criteria, the patients had to have an audiometric interaural asymmetry of at least 50 dB at the frequency of the tuning fork tone (512 kHz). The Weber tuning fork test was performed using a standard 512 Hz tuning fork for all patients. The pure tone threshold average was considered the average threshold at four frequencies: 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz. Profound hearing loss was defined by a pure tone threshold average of 90 dB or higher, as described previously. Pure tone audiograms (PTA) determined the ipsilateral and contralateral hearing status. The analysis involved the retrospective review of the hospital records and audiograms of adult patients with profound unilateral hearing loss (UHL) of at least ten years’ duration who presented to our outpatient department and/or auditory implant clinic between 20. The study was approved by the ethics committee of Charité Medical University (approval number EA1/015/21). These patients had different lateralization patterns on the Weber tuning fork test, seemingly related to the age of onset of deafness. This article reports on thirteen cases of patients with longstanding unilateral profound hearing loss of various etiologies. To date, there is no explanation as to why some patients with longstanding single-sided deafness lateralize and others do not. The observation that some patients with longstanding unilateral deafness fail to lateralize on the Weber test has been previously mentioned in the literature but remains poorly understood. In the case of unilateral sensorineural hearing loss, the intercochlear intensity and phase differences lead to vibrations being perceived louder in the contralateral unaffected ear, producing sound lateralization. Clinical and animal experiments have shown that bone conduction stimulates the cochlea mainly through two routes: (1) through the vibration of the middle ear ossicles and (2) vibrations of the skull itself (mainly of the cerebrospinal fluid). The mechanism of sound lateralization of the Weber test has intrigued hearing health professionals for many decades. In patients with conductive hearing loss, the sound should typically lateralize to the affected side, whereas in sensorineural hearing loss, it lateralizes to the contralateral side. The Weber tuning fork test has been mainly used in patients with unilateral hearing loss to distinguish between sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. Tuning fork tests have remained a mainstay of otologic examination for over a century. The findings may suggest a role for the Weber test as a simple, quick, and economical tool for screening poor cochlear implant candidates, thus potentially supporting the decision-making and counseling of patients with longstanding single-sided deafness. This notion may partially explain the poor outcome of adult cochlear implantation in longstanding single-sided deafness. The findings may imply a central adaptation process due to chronic unilateral auditory deprivation starting before the critical period of auditory maturation. In this patient cohort, childhood-onset unilateral profound hearing loss was significantly associated with the lack of lateralization of the Weber tuning fork test (Fisher’s exact test, p < 0.05) and the absence of tinnitus in the affected ear (Fisher’s exact test, p < 0.001). In the present study, we conducted a retrospective analysis of the medical records of patients with unilateral profound hearing loss (single-sided deafness or asymmetric hearing loss) for at least ten years. The observation that the Weber test does not lateralize in some patients with longstanding unilateral deafness has been previously described but remains poorly understood. Sound should typically lateralize to the contralateral side in unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. The Weber tuning fork test is a standard otologic examination tool in patients with unilateral hearing loss. |
